Hiya folks, Just a general shout out for a really well-organised tournament. I'm sure the organisers will be keen to hear other opinions as well. Some comments: - I found Challonge to be an excellent tool to keep track of my matchups
- Next time, it would be a really good idea to make it mandatory for all the participants' Challonge names to match their In-Game names
- Great mods on the Twitch channel who managed to keep the chaos from getting out of control
- Props to the community for helping each other out during the tourney
- The Hex client was rock-solid for the first 5 rounds before we ran into any serious issues - good stuff CZE
My only would be that I'm GMT +10 and staying awake from 2am-7am on Sunday for the first 5 rounds was pretty brutal. Needless to say, I couldn't even watch the top 8 the next day. Can we get a summary of how that went? All up, it was a great day and I enjoyed myself and chatting with the other players. There were some really cool decks to play against and I learned heaps. Can't recommend it enough for others to try out. Cheers

Many of the Top 8 were streaming during their matches. You can look for videos on their Twitch channels. I still have to highlight mine to make watching it easier, since we had about 4-5 games bug out on us in addition to the 3 we actually finished.

I sent a message to John, but my biggest comment would be that there needs to be some more administrative help with the Top 8. Some of the first Top 8 matches waited 30-45 minutes to start as there wasn't any HTP "signal" to start and there were also some judge questions that players had to sort out for themselves.
Also, while it is cool to have people get the chance to test overnight, it may be better in the future for these one-day events that don't break 9 rounds to have the Top 8 play immediately following the swiss, mostly to help keep logistics a bit simpler.

Nah I think two days is fine, cause I couldn't stand anymore on saturday, 7 rounds is enough. But yeah Sunday we had absolutely no one there and it was a little weird, but I personally was one of the few that had very little problems only one game was bugged out vs renakh, and he felt that he could have won but he didn't know my hand was full of burn and if he attacked he would have had a bad day.

I PMed Wurtil about his concerns but I'm very happy that everyone enjoyed the event. I can say that without a doubt the two day format worked exponentially better than the month long format of the last event. While this may not be true for everyone, I can count all the issues and complaints on one hand compared to the buckets that I needed to hold last events issues and complaints. While the turn out was "only" ~100 compared to 187 last time, I felt like the event was just more smooth and successful. We had a few drops early on because I think a handful of players weren't aware that it was a one day event, but that was expected.
The March event will run on the same schedule. When we figure out what he best weekend is in March, we will be announcing that. Should be toward the end of the month, closer to the release of the closed beta. Note that the March event will very likely be the last "alpha" event as we move into beta and hopefully better, more stable events for the Challenge Series.
Thank you all so much for supporting us and for the few who donated a few dollars for prize support. It's all very appreciated. Hopefully more people can make the next event and continue to make the Challenge Series a very successful part of the Hex TCG.
-John

Thanks for the Tourney again it was great.
One thing I noticed was the tie breaks seemed to be completely decided by how early your opponents dropped out. Because of this adding a reason for people to finish the whole tournament would make things less random. Maybe giving more points to people that complete the whole thing?

It's because for some reason Challonge changes the points of people who dropped out to 0 rather than keeping them at whatever points they were at when they dropped. This tanks the tiebreakers of their opponents which is unfair.

Yeah this time I got lucky with my tiebreakers but last tournament I was always like 4 points down, but its pretty shitty how easily you can be removed from contention this way.

As others have mentioned it, I thought I would speak about my experience as one of the people who dropped out early. This was due to having to play a minimum of 1 round to get points. I had to set alarm for 1:45am to wake up to get points. Unless I have some mad winning streak, I will not play until the end of ANY tournament that starts at this time. As it was, I made a play mistake vs Wurtil in round 1 (that meant the difference between winning 2-1 and losing 2-1) that I may not have made if it weren't the middle of the night.
My suggestion to increase the play experience for those in the tournament (so you don't get paired round 1 against someone who is about to drop) is to give points to people who have been time zoned out of the event. Alternatively a second "conference" for PST may mean the tournament gets closer to 180 people on board (who don't drop).
I know that doing this means someone has to put in a lot of unpaid work to do this so I don't expect it and appreciate all that is being done by G Prime, John and others.
I know these ideas have been mentioned before, but I am passionate about the game and looking for ways to include as many people as possible. Games like WoW TCG (possibly others?) would allow you to be involved in the competitive scene if you lived in the right location. I am hoping this, as an online game, can avoid the same limitations.

I second the idea of a second tourny run on the same day a few hours (6 hours?) later than the current tournament. This would help cover a lot more time zones and would make people like raven and myself happy I realise this requires extra manpower but I'm pretty sure there have been people volunteering to help administer tournaments since the first tournament...

Something that could be done, but would require WAY more work for John and company, is to have 2 or 3 Challenge Series that all compete on the same day but follow different times and have their own point totals. This would hopefully give people a chance to play in a more acceptable starting/ending time without having to worry about the points of one group interfere with another groups. We won't know what the signups will look like once we hit beta but assuming we see a open beta, I wouldn't be shocked to see the player count double for these events. Splitting the players up into more manageable groups might keep the events running smooth and keep the time for the event down. Also, we could do a top 8 the next day and at the end of a season try to do a match-up of the top players across all Series. Other then that, the only suggestion I would give for next time is that we have planed 50-60 min pause somewhere in the middle of it to allow a lunch recess. I only bring this up because several of my matches seem to only leave me with 10-15 min left before the next match started and an hour of down time to refuel and refresh would have been nice.

Have two brackets the US and European brackets. The top 8 would meet from each bracket the next day. The final 8 one week later.
