During my match, my opponent had a Soul Armament and no creatures in play. He attempted to play an Ancestral Spectre, at which point I was going to counter. However, the game bugged and didn't let me counter it with countermagic. The "Pass Priority" button never showed up on my screen. He then attempted to play a second creature, which the game did give me the option of countering.
I explained the situation to my opponent, and he refused to remake the game and play it over. This, I might add, was after him saying "let's handle bugs in the spirit of the game". While I can agree that he more than likely had the advantage at that particular point in the game, I was by no means out of it. I had drawn a minimum of 10 more cards than my opponent and was yet to reach the best part of my deck. Furthermore, I had a reasonable suspicion that the second creature he attempted to play had been drawn off of the spectre I was unable to counter. While I was recording the match, I had reasoned (before the aforementioned turn) that he did not have a creature in his hand because he had opportune times to play creatures with excess mana and didn't. Then, while attempting to reason with my opponent (who were trying their best to cop a win without having to replay) the game delivered me a message that I was defeated. I was not even allowed to take my turn in a game which was still potentially winnable, despite being screwed out of being able to counter the spectre.
Did I mention I recorded this game? I can post/PM the video to the Tournament Organizer or someone that can give me a ruling on this.
I understand that I was not in the best position in the world, and that my deck struggles against some cards. However, I still had a reasonable chance to win the game, given the contents of my deck and the would-be board state and feel that the game should have been replayed. If a similar situation had occurred in an e-sport like Starcraft or DotA 2 it would have been replayed; on Magic Online I would have been issued a refund (obviously there are no refunds here, but that is not the point). Given that, and the facts stated above, I believe it is reasonable to request a re-game at that point in time and that a re-game is still the appropriate action.
While I do not condemn my opponent's behavior and actions, as he was simply try to win in a competitive environment, I am disappointed in the lack of class and sportsmanship they demonstrated, despite the way the game had gone. There were many ways they could have dealt with the situation, such as saying "Let's play it out, and if things were close we could re-game" or by just agreeing to a re-game in general. Instead, they offered to "Play you for fun after I record my wins". How insulting.
Thanks for taking the time to read this complaint.
